Stellenbosch

Paarl – Stellenbosch – Paarl 67 km.

Stellenbosch is the “capital” of the wine country as well as a large university city.

Go towards Cape Town on route N1 and take exit 47. Follow route R44 to Stellenbosch. You will pass South Africa’s most famous vineyard – Kanonkop on your way.

When you reach Stellenbosch make a left turn by the second traffic light to the centre of the city. It is easy to find a parking spot here.

In the centre of the city, you will find lots of cafés, restaurants, galleries, and shops. Take a walk on Dorp Street to see the renovated house facades, interesting boutiques, and small plazas.

On your way back, go for at short while on R44 and make a right turn by the first Franschhoek traffic light (the one you passed as you entered Stellenbosch). After about 1,5 km, you will see a sign on your left pointing to the vineyard Rustenberg. In October and November (the south African spring), their garden is worth a visit.

Further on towards Franschhoek, you will pass the vineyard Delair on your right hand side. This is a great place to stop for lunch before the steep road will take you through the Hellshoogte Pass. The name does not refer to hell, but to the fact that the road is very steep. You will pass through the villages Johannesdal and Pniel and on your right, the large vineyard Boschendal. Also worth a visit.

The Hellshoogte Road will connect you to R45. Take a right towards Franschhoek and a left to Paarl. You will pass the most famous vineyards – Plaisir and Vrede en Lust.

The wine tasting at Vrede en Lust is one of the most pompous and they have a small restaurant from which you can buy cheese and bread to bring back home.

R45 continues through Paarl (Main Road) but before that, you can go onto N1 and take exit 62A that will quickly bring you back to Wildepaardejacht.
